The Aussies rarely admit when the British do something better, and even when it’s true Australia will immediately set out to better its best. However, with the new season of Top Gear Australia airing Down Under this week, they have been willing to admit that the show has stalled.
When you see the episode for yourself http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=hkdWXL1ekwc&feature=related it is easy to understand their criticism. Top Gear is a success because the writing is good, the segments are interesting and the presenters are engaging and believable, in the UK. In Australia they have trotted out every stereotype ever associated with the country and even made some up and you can’t help but cringe.
I think the Australia writers may find a wave of letters from insulted Australians embarrassed as a whole about the image which was portrayed of them this week. Top Gear is a car show for car enthusiasts and surely the writers would have given Australians a little more credit, and not have been as ignorant as to think that the version of Top Gear Australia they have concocted, would actually appeal to anyone in Australia.
