Recently the police in Melbourne, Australia, have been seen patrolling their beat in Hummers instead of their usual police vehicles. This has of course caused outrage in the media because while the police say they need more of a street presence to deal with the rising crime of the area, others counter that taking military vehicles into a suburban area to try and stop violent behaviour is simply going to turn the area into a war zone.
Hummers are only relatively new in Australia and it is only within the last 12 months that Hummer limousines have come into their own as party buses. So while it was actually Hummer who approached the Melbourne police department with the offer of vehicles, Hummers do not have the party bus image Down Under, that they have here in the UK.
But the important thing to remember is that Hummers actually are, or at least were, military vehicles and is this situation just like yelling at a child to get them to stop screaming?
