I’m not really sure why red was chosen as the colour to mean stop in our cultural psyche but it was and is and does usually portray ‘stop’ to people from western cultures. However, when you actually think about it, red really has nothing to do with stopping – fire engines for example are bright red and it is their job not to stop.
Red is also a colour used in decorating to evoke emotions and passions, and so red isn’t really stopping anything in this situation either. And take a look at the red limousines which are available for hire. For a start there are red fire engine limousines, which we have already established are made not to stop. Then there are the candy red stretch party bus limousines which are bright and fun and eye catching and when you see a red limousine arrive on your doorstep to pick you up for a night out, you know that all systems are go for a great night out.
