Semantics can cause a lot of problems and annoyance when words which seem to have the same meaning, are used interchangeably. For example, in some areas, the limousine industry could suffer greatly from the continued reference of limousines for rent, rather than limousines for hire.
The word rent seems to be used in place of hire in newspaper articles and even in the industry without anyone really realising the affect of this.
For example, renting a car is when you go into a rental car company, take the keys and promise to refill the fuel tank before you bring it back. However, with limousines being advertised for rent, this implies that passengers can simply take the limos out for a spin for a few hours.
There are also issues in some areas of different laws and taxes being applied to rented or hired vehicles and limousines. For example, some areas will charge sales tax on rented vehicles and we all know how much tax trouble we can get into if we pay or charge or don’t charge the right amount of tax.
This is not only an issue for limo hire companies with regards to their passengers, as many limo hire companies have chauffeurs who are independent contractors. As part of their contractual agreement, the chauffeurs lease the limousines from the limo hire companies. In this case, a lease can also be considered a rental agreement and must also have sales tax applied to it too.
So when you are next getting quotes for limo hire, make sure you pay attention to the words used and the offers presented and if something sounds odd to you, make sure you query it. It may simply be a misuse of words or it may be a deal you don’t want to get involved with.
