While exploring Wales, you cannot miss visiting the majestic Snowdon Mountain. It stands 3,560 feet and is said to be the burial place of the giant Ogre Rhita, who was vanquished by King Arthur.
Since 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has been escorting visitors to the peaks of this great mountain. The track travels to within 66 feet of the summit and is a true engineering feat. The ride to the top of the mountain is also accompanied by a commentary in your carriage about the history and secrets of the mountain.
On a clear day, you can see from the top of the mountain to the Isle of Man and the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. Once at the top, you are able to take in the view from your carriage or get out and stretch your legs during the half hour stop. Then it is back to the train for the hour trip back to the station.
Being so high, the peak often experiences very cold and unpredictable weather. Remember to pack your woollies and try not to be disappointed if the weather is only good enough for the train to go to the halfway point at Rocky Valley or the three-quarter point at Clogwyn.
After your journey to the heights of England and Wales, you can enjoy a warm cup of coffee, a pastry or a hot meal at the Llanberis Café. The platform grill ‘A Taste of Wales’ also offers meals cooked from fresh Welsh produce which you can take in the train for your trip. The Summit Café offers a top choice of hot and cold drinks and food.
