1930's Limos...

The 1930s Depression was a tough time right around the world and as would be expected, this was reflected in the luxury car and limousine industry.

The luxury car manufacturer Isotta Fraschini which began marketing cars to the wealthy middle classes of America in the 1920s, was hit hard by the economic crisis of the 1930s and the effects of World War II and slowed and eventually stopped production of their luxury cars and limousines.

Also, as with any new development, there are a number of manufacturers who pop up and try to create a bigger, better product that the next man. This was especially true for the limousine industry during the 1930s. Many limousine companies emerged and were taken over or closed as the companies not only had to compete with each other but also combat the Depression. One of the few limousine manufacturers to emerge into the aftermath triumphant was Cadillac who went on to be the only regular domestic producer of limousines.

The 1930s were not a total downfall in the limousine industry however, many limousines were built during this time and are now highly sought after as collectors' items and wedding cars.

For example, the 1932 Maybach DS 8 Zeplins were one of the finest vehicles around in the 1930s. While the steering of this 1932 limousine was quite heavy, this was a problem for the chauffeur, not for the passenger.

They had an opulent rear passenger compartment fitted out with wood, chrome and leather. As with the rest of the car, the wooden dashboard was still stylish but not over the top at the time and this elegance is recognised today by car enthusiasts and admirers of beauty.

Cadillac also created some very stylish limousines which have also stood the test of time and are still being used as wedding cars by modern limo hire companies. These Cadillac limousines include the 1939 Cadillac 60 Special which could chauffeur two passengers at a time in a plush velvet interior. The 1938 and '39 Cadillac 75 limousines were cars built with beauty in mind and are still often a popular choice for brides with room for four in the passenger compartment with plenty of leg room.

So despite the economic trouble in the 1930s, the limousine manufacturers pushed on and there were plenty of celebrities to pull their luxury cars through the bad times to be a lasting reminder of the beauty of luxury car construction today.
