1950s Limos...
As the world was recovering in the 1950s from the aftermath of World War II, the limousine found a new market amongst the emerging rock stars of the time, as well as continuing as a favourite transport for world leaders.
Elvis Presley is well known for his love of limousines and was also known to give away a Cadillac limousine to people who left a positive impression on him after meeting them. For example, in 1955, Presley gave a convertible to Sam Phillips, the Sun Records chief.
The Dutch Royal family also used Cadillac limousines from 1925 into the late 1950s, after which they switched their vehicles to Fords.
Still in the spirit of giving; Stalin gave Mao Zedong five bullet proof limousines in the 1950s. Zedong was very fond of his new limousines and used one wherever he went. This however began to breed jealousy in the other members of the Party and so 100 Chinese versions of the limousine were handmade for the entire country’s leadership.
Not long before his death, Mao Zedong commissioned the construction of a ten metre, six door, luxury limousine which was to include a fridge, TV, phone, desk, double bed and sofa. Zedong’s aim was to promote the Chinese car industry but unfortunately he died before the car was completed.
There are however, several seven metre limousines available for tourists to tour Beijing. The limousines are ‘Mrs Mao’s’ and are stocked with Russian Caviar, French champagne and copies of Mao’s Little Red Book.
Limousines were becoming a regular mode of transport in the 1950s; they were emerging onto the streets and into the media and often referred to by spectators as land yachts because of their size and luxurious and extensive interiors.
