1950s Limos Created...
Limousines have been the preferred vehicle for the rich and famous since their invention and some of the most stylish limousines to ever be built are those created in the post war boom of the 1950s.
These limousines include the 1950s Mercedes-Benz limousines which can seat up to four passengers. Several of these Mercedes-Benz limousines were specially hand built for heads of state. These limousines are the height of luxury travel and can even have the windows removed for wedding parties.
The limousines created by Daimler were often chosen by royalty for their transportation. This affiliation continued into the 1950s until Rolls-Royce won favour.
In the early 1950s, Daimler produced a number of extravagant show cars commissioned by the then Chairman, Sir Bernard Docker. The public were fascinated by this new range of cars which were created to raise the company’s profile.
The first show car was a luxurious touring limousine called the Golden Daimler created in 1952, followed by the 1953 Blue Clover coupe, the Silver Flash based on the three litre Regency chassis and the 1954 Stardust. While Daimler were generally favoured by royalty, this new emergence of show cars were far too opulent for the tastes of a post war society and soon after, the royals chose Rolls-Royce as their royal limousines.
Chrysler was luckier in the post war luxury car business however. Chrysler produced a limousine series called the Imperial which began production in 1926. Three models were produced in 1949; one four door, six passenger limousine and two eight passenger limousines. Chrysler was aiming to spin off the Imperial as its own marque to compete with the Lincoln and Cadillac marques of the time.
In 1955 Chrysler unveiled its Forward Look Styling by Virgil Exner and this set the tone and style of the Imperials into the ‘60s. This new design philosophy ensured that the Imperials were always reassessed every two to three years and new body styles were experimented with and the transmissions and engines were developed to the highest standards.
These developments lead to a variety of shapes and sizes in the Chrysler range but they ensured they found out what worked and stuck with it.
