1960s Limos...
Because of the increase in the use of limousines by celebrities and world leaders, many more coach builders emerged to take advantage of this new market in luxury limousines.
While the stars are often just as famous for getting into trouble as they are for their singing or acting, they are not likely to discriminate against the style and luxury of a limousine in their trouble making schemes. For example, Keith Moon, the drummer from The Who celebrated his birthday during the band’s tour of the US in 1967. After some serious partying, the police were called to the hotel and Moon tried to escape in the band’s limousine. Being naked and not having the keys didn’t stop Moon jumping into the limo, taking off the handbrake and rolling the limousine into the pool! Needless to say Moon was charged the damages to the vehicle.
In 1960, Daimler was acquired by Jaguar and the last run of the Daimler vehicles were still sold with Daimler badges. One such Daimler vehicle was the DR450, a limousine version of the Majestic Manor but with a longer chassis and a higher roof. Eight hundred and sixty four of the DR450 limousines were made until 1968 when production ceased. In 1968 the DS420 limousine was launched and when compared with the new luxury cars built by Jaguar to wear the Jaguar badge, was nowhere near as stylishly finished.
The Chrysler Imperial series became a more conservative model in the 1960s compared with its experimentation throughout the ‘50s. In 1960 Chrysler hired Elwood Engel away from Ford to design their luxury vehicles. Engle’s limousine designs of the 1960s had more angular bodies but the 1964 Imperials still strongly resembled Engle’s previous work at Ford on the Lincoln limousines.
However, in 1967 a new Imperial body was introduced which was individual from all other cars in production at the time. In 1968, the Imperial also saw the end of its convertible model. Following these development, in 1969, the Imperials were stand out luxury cars for their smooth, rounded exterior lines.
The Imperial limousines which were created in the 1960s were famous for their strength and occupant safety as well as for their style and looks.
