The late 1990s saw the arrival of the sports utility vehicle, or SUVs. These vehicles were already over sized and an imposing presence on the road, and the only natural thing for the limousine industry to do was to turn these new SUVs into stretch limo SUVs.
The most popular stretched SUV limousines were created from the Lincoln Navigators and the Cadillac excursions. These limousines are billed as ‘party buses and often have disco lighting, opulent leather couch seating and fully stocked bars.
There were also many traditional limousine builders continuing to build more discreet and sleek limousines with a focus on class rather than shock value, into the 1990s. These included the Cadillac Fleetwood luxury cars which were built throughout the 1990s with a wheelbase of over 113 inches. Changes were made throughout the ‘90s to enhance the power and ride comfort of the Fleetwood limousines to put them in the same league as the luxury cars produced from Germany.
In 1993 the Fleetwood switched from front to rear wheel drive. This new orientation coupled with the continually revised interior and exterior designs, came to ensure the Cadillac was recognised as one of the finest luxury cars produced at the time.
