Long Hours for Chauffeurs...
While we often hire a limousine to take us home after a big night out or an action packed day of exploring when we know we will be too tired to drive, spare a thought for the chauffeurs, who chauffeurs the chauffeur home?
It has been revealed that many chauffeurs are working exceptionally long shifts, with nearly 60% of chauffeurs driving their limos for over 11 hours every day!
While the news has come as a shock to government departments who are now calling for restrictions on shifts, the long hours are the norm for chauffeurs and limo companies.
The government has called for limits to be set on the number of hours chauffeurs can drive for in one shift, with the limits to be enforced by tachographs. However, this new regulation has been met with little enthusiasm from the limo hire companies.
Limo hire companies find it hard to find good drivers and when they do, there is extensive and continual training needed to keep the chauffeurs up to standard. However, it is a catch 22 situation, as drivers (or anyone for that matter) who continually work 11 hour shifts, are comprising the safety of themselves and their passengers as well as working with diminished concentration and attentiveness.
Being a chauffeur is a career which hinges on the best possible service and if a chauffeur has been continually working long shifts, their ability to be the best chauffeur they can be is no where near as good as it should be.
However, the limousine and chauffeur industry is one which is conducive to long and unusual hours as limousines are not only hired for business meetings, limos are needed for the red eye airport transfers, picking up party goers after a big night out and waiting at wedding receptions which can go long into the night.
Therefore, while it is tempting and easy for chauffeurs to work long and irregular hours, it is not in the chauffeur or the limo hire company's best interests to allow it; as their safety and their service will be compromised.
