Everyone in the world is fascinated by opulence and luxury. We rush to greet royalty when they grace us with a tour of the streets and we sit on the edge of our seats as we watch award shows to see what the stars are up to. Well, South Australia has recently indulged the luxury-hungry with the Bay to Birdwood Rally. Thousands of people line the streets to watch as those lucky enough to own a classic luxury car ride in procession from The Bay to Birdwood in the hills.
The Bay to Birdwood is a South Australian tradition and the most recent run on 24 September, saw 1,500 classic cars make the trip. The Bay to Birdwood is a great day out for those in the rally as well as those watching. Owning a classic car is an obsession (and it’s a bit of a status thing too) so why not show off your perfectly restored Mercedes Benz or Rolls-Royce on a Spring day for a drive through the hills?
There are also awards given out to the participants, with categories for the most stylish, the most popular and the most authentic vehicles in the rally. The Bay to Birdwood is a chance for regular classic and luxury car owners to be treated as royalty as they grace our streets with a tour.
The spectators camp on the side of the road and enjoy picnics and wine while getting ready to wave as the entrants in the Bay to Birdwood ride by. These cars are also taken out several times during the year and most likely get almost as much attention each time – it is the public obsession with luxury and glamour.
