Fairer Cost Prom

Proms have fast become more than a simple celebration of the end of school, they have turned mild mannered school students into cash spending monsters.

The modern prom goers will go all out and plan, prepare and spend as if they were getting ready for their wedding day. School students are so busy visiting all of the most fashionable dress shops, booking makeovers in the most exclusive beauty salons and hiring the biggest limousine they can find that they are blowing their budget, or more often their parent’s budget, right out of the water.

Because of the extremes school students are now going to for their proms, some schools have put a stopper in the spending. One New York school is organising a dinner cruise instead of a full blown prom.

The end of year cruise for the students will include a ride in the school bus to the pier and a dress code of simply jackets and ties for the guys and dresses for the girls to assuage any inclination for the kids to splurge on ball gowns and tuxedos.

Schools in the area have been boycotting the ostentatious proms which have come to be the norm. Many are Catholic school and they feel the expense is not in line with the values taught at their school.

The Principals of the local schools are trying to avoid the discomfort which comes when those with more money to spend on their prom, highlight the ‘shortcomings’ of those students with less money to spend. The schools felt that the dresses, the limos and all of the extras were being purchased and flaunted for the sake of spending the money, not simply because the students wanted to look their best.

After threatening to ban prom altogether, the students of these schools came up with alternative prom activities which include a traditional prom in the school gym, and a dinner cruise to celebrate with their friends.
