Safe & Certified Stretch Limos...
Many of the stylish stretch limousines you see cruising the streets of the UK, are actually just ordinary luxury cars, cut open and extended. Does that sound a little haphazard to you? Well it can be, and it can cause a whole lot of safety issues. This is why the coachbuilders who do the stretching must be certified, as well as making sure the cars they create adhere to strict guidelines.
This is important for the limo hire companies who buy the stretch limos as they may need to revoke the car’s warranty if something goes wrong and the builders have to make sure they don’t void the warranty.
Luxury car manufacturers such as Lincoln and Cadillac encourage the transformation of their cars to stretch limousines. They have even created guidelines to become a Lincoln Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) or a Cadillac Master Coachbuilder (CMC).
These certified coachbuilders ensure the cars they create meet the safety and design requirements to keep the warranty intact. They are also the only ones who can extend Lincolns and Cadillacs without voiding the warranty. Both Lincoln and Cadillac also offer extended warranties for converted vehicles.
To help the limo hire company ensure the car they receive has these certifications, there is a certificate of authenticity attached to the inside door panel. The panel was put there by the coachbuilder who ‘stretched’ the limo and states that on the day of completion, the vehicle complied with all of the relevant safety standards.
These certified builders also carry product liability insurance, generally to the value of around one million US dollars. This protects the driver, passengers and hire company if there is a serious accident.
Also, cars built by QVM and CMCs are supported by the safety standards of Lincoln and Cadillac. However, if your limo is not certified by one of these builders or the equivalent, the product liability insurance will be void.
So, it is good to know that while these stylish luxury cars are being pulled apart and put back together again, there are regulations in place which understand the changed needs and safety requirements of stretch limos.
