As the regulatory and informational body in the UK for the limousine industry, the National Limousine Association (NLA) of the UK has outlined the issues they have with the limousine regulations regarding passenger safety.

The industry is split into two main categories; limos carrying up to and including eight passengers. And limos carrying from eight to 16 passengers, for which there needs to be more relaxed requirements for a COIF. Licensing and regulation also needs to be carried out by the Traffic Commissioner instead of the local authorities.

All chauffeurs should be registered, including a check of their police records. There needs to be regular independent maintenance and inspection for all limos as well as annual checks of a limo's insurance.

The public also need to be aware of the current regulations, as well as any suggested changes and areas which require improvement. The local authorities also need to be clear about the current restrictions on limos, while vehicle inspectors also need specific schooling in the regulations and what to look for.

While many of these decisions will not be resolved immediately, in April of this year, Councillor Stuart Exelby who is a cabinet minister for crime and public safety said standard conditions had been introduced through consultation between limo operators, limo associations and the South Yorkshire Police. Exleby is taking responsibility for the safety of limousines in the Doncaster area, saying that 'we license taxi cabs so it makes sense to license limousines as well'.

All limo companies within the borough will be required to licence their vehicles with the council to obtain an operator's licence to carry out business. In addition to that, the limo drivers will need a private hire driver's licence and badge. Drivers must also be deemed a fit and proper person to hold a licence.

All companies which supply alcohol, on top of the bill or 'free', will need to obtain a premises licence and a personal licence in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003.

These new reforms come into place in October, however, make sure the limo hire company you choose is properly licensed. Remember, here at Limo Broker, all our agents are clearly notified and advised to comply with their local council regulations, as part of their agency contract.
