Hispano Suiza Limo
The six wheel, six cylinder stretch town car, the Hispano Suiza appeared in numerous war movies throughout its career and now resides in the Forney Museum of Transportation in Colorado.
Built in 1923 in Barcelona by a French designer and builder, the Hispano Suiza was built by the order of an unknown King who was disposed before he could take delivery of this luxurious town car. The car was then bought by a Hollywood director and commenced its film career.
La Hispano Suiza Fabrica De Automoviles was founded in 1904 in Barcelona by Damián Mateu from Spain and the Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt. The name of the company, Hispano Suiza, translates to Spanish Swiss, making reference to its founders.
From 1904 – 1914 Birkigt designed several engines for the company. He designed the first four cylinder 16 valve engine in what was considered to be the first sports car, the Hispano Suiza 45 Cr. In 1911, La Hispano Suiza opened a second, bigger factory in France to keep up with demand.
During the war, Birkigt turned to making aircraft engines to meet this new demand. Later, the Hispano Suiza H6 was displayed at the Paris Motor Show in 1919 and was one of the most powerful automobiles in production, benefiting from Birkigt’s aircraft engine experience. The H6 was also the first car to have four wheel disc brakes.
The Hispano Suiza sports cars went on to win sports car races driven by the wealthy sportsman Andre Dubonnet, during which time, an eight litre Hispano was released. The Hispano Suiza was a popular sports car and a must have luxury car. It was the most expensive car in the world in its day and had the most elegant bodywork of any other car at the time. The Hispano Suiza were used by royalty in Europe and India, as well as by wealthy celebrities.
While the term ‘limousine’ may not have emerged into common usage at the time, we can easily look back and label the Hispano Suiza as one of the earliest and most luxurious limos of all time, in both performance and style.
