Traditional Weddings - Information...

One of the familiar preparations before the wedding is for the bride to find 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence for her shoe', yet few know the reasons behind these traditions, so here are the origins of some well known wedding traditions so you can decide for yourself whether you want to keep to tradition or start your own.

'Old' is thought to represent the life you are leaving behind or you may choose something that has been passed down to you – grandmother's wedding photo or your mother's wedding band.

'New' represents the life you are moving into through your marriage. It may be a picture taken at your engagement or the key to your new home.

'Borrowed' should be an item symbolic of something you respect or admire about another. It might be your mother-in-law's necklace, the borrowed must be returned after the wedding to ensure good luck. The idea of borrowing something from a happily married woman also ensures your marriage will be a happy one.

'Blue' is often seen as a reference to ancient Israel where blue is a sign of fidelity. Blue is also a sign of purity, as pictures of the Virgin Mary often show her in a blue veil. Blue may be a thin blue ribbon on your garter for your wedding.

'Silver sixpence' is an old custom where the bride carried three silver coins on her wedding day; one for her mother-in-law, one for the first person she met on the road after her wedding day and one to carry into her new home to ensure wealth in her married life. Some brides will substitute a penny for the sixpence which is less common.

As you can see, in more traditional weddings, brides were very superstitious about their wedding preparations. However, it is nice to have traditional aspects to a modern wedding, and something to believe in.
